Well with a day like this something bad was bound to happen.
I volunteered to be the accident car today. Was I crazy? probably a little but like I always say "you can only work 1 accident at a time" So right out of rollcall there is a 2 vehicle accident south side. I get my patrol car and go to my POV to get my bag and as I'm putting my bag in my patrol vehicle I slip and start to fall but manage to grab hold of the door frame with my left hand to stop my fall. When I did that I felt a little sting in my left shoulder. I played it off and continued onto my call. As I pulled on location of the accident I was on the other side of the median and saw that it was a rear ender with no visible damage. I asked if there were any injuries and the driver of the first vehicle stated "yea my back is starting to hurt" and as soon as she said that I thought I saw the dollar signs floating around her head. So I pulled behind them and got out and looked for the damage. It consisted of 2 screw marks on the rear bumper of the first vehicle cause by the second vehicle which had no damage at all. So I explain that it will be a non reportable accident since there are no injuries and the damage is under $1500.00. Now upon hearing this the driver of the first vehicle says that her back is really starting to hurt and why is it non reportable. I explain that the damage is clearly under the amount that the state requires a report to be done and that in order to be classified as an injury someone needs to leave in an ambulance. Now having said that I can see the wheels turning for the driver of the first vehicle and I'm guessing she is going to ask for an ambulance since she starts to ask who is going to pay her medical bills. I explain again that a non reportable does not mean the accident didn't happen just that the Commonwealth will not be notified that it happened. She finally got it and I completed the exchange form and we all went our merry way. Some lawyer is going to get a call shortly.
I handle a few more calls and then my shoulder starts to hurt. Nothing bad just a nagging pain when I move it certain ways. I tell my Sergeant and he asks if I want to go to Occupational Health and I told him yea just to get checked out. I head back to the precinct grab the paperwork and head to the hospital.
I get to the hospital and after getting checked in I go back to a room and the Doctor comes in with a gown and tells me to put this on and he will be right back. I strip down to my tightly whiteys and socks and put the gown on and sit on the examination table and wait for him to come back. After about 5 minutes he knocks and opens the door and sees me sitting there with just my socks showing and starts to laugh and says that I didn't have to get undressed he just needs to look at my shoulder. I said well you gave me a gown I might as well use it.An e-xray and 800mg of Motrin later I left with a diagnose of a possibly strain/sprain and to ice it down throughout the day and come back next week to check it again.
I go back in service and handle a few more accidents to end out my shift.
