Wow!!! what a nice day out today, not too sunny and the temperature was awesome.
We had 2 officers in Juvenile and Domestic court today and as always when we are a little shorthanded it seems like the calls never stop. I personally like to keep busy because it makes the shift go by a lot faster than sitting waiting for calls.
The only interesting call I had today was a 3 car accident in which a lady attempted to make a left hand turn onto a side street. What she forgot to do was to make sure there was no traffic coming in the other direction, ah it happens. Well she gets t-boned and the car that hit her goes bouncing into another car that was just sitting in traffic waiting for the light to change.
I'm the first one there and I have 3 vehicles involved, automotive fluid all over the place and people wanting to tell me what happened. I go to all the drivers and they are all conscious and breathing so that's a plus. I then hear the sweet sounds of the sirens so I know help is almost here and I have to hustle. If you don't get your information fast you have to wait because once the FD and ambulance gets there you gotta let them work and stay out of their way.
I first spoke to the lady who had the right of way and she told me that she was coming down the street on a green signal and this lady started to turn in front of her. I tell her to go on an she says that the lady just stops in the middle of the intersection and that she could not avoid striking her. I get her license and phone number and I'm off to vehicle 2.
The lady in vehicle 2 is not injured at all, she was sitting at the light and the lady I just talked to hit her car after hitting the car who stopped in the intersection, she has minor damage to her front bumper so I get her information.
So far so good, another Officer is there and he gets the information on the driver who caused the accident as well as a witness statement which is consistent with what my first lady told me that the lady who caused the accident stopped in the middle of the street.
The lady who had the right of way is transported to the hospital and the lady who caused the accident refused medical treatment at the scene and went to the hospital with her grandson who showed up. The other lady did not have any injuries and she was given information and she left.
Wreckers show up and tow the 2 vehicles and we open the roadway and I head to the hospital to give the drivers the exchange form and to issue a summons to the lady who caused the accident.
I take care of the first lady and go to the room where the lady who caused the accident was. She now had her son there with her and I asked her what happened and she told me that she was making a left turn and that she got hit. I asked her if she remembered stopping in the intersection and she gave me a look like I had just stumped her on a million dollar question. She told me there were no other cars out there. I told her there were at least 2 other vehicles out there because one of them hit you and that 2 people said that you stopped smack dab in the intersection and based on their statements I am issuing you a summons for Failure to Yield. I explained the summons and asked her to sign it and then I was on my way.
Oh by the way she was 92 years old, maybe that's why she had trouble remembering. She's been driving longer than I've been on this planet. I made it a point to tell her son that her driving days are probably over and he agreed. I felt a little bad writing her a summons but she did a lot of damage and could have killed somebody. 92 years old......that's a record for me.
After that I had a simple hit and run report and some other stuff that was non-eventful.
All in all a good day
