The first call of the day usually determines the rest of the shift and when I got my first call I thought I was in for a long day.
We get a call for a disorderly/mental party at one of our local old folks home. Supposedly an Alzheimers patient got his hands on a wheel chair foot rest and was swinging it around trying to hit the staff with it. When Brad "angry man" Nixon and I got there the staff had disarmed him and were holding him. We got him into the dining area where they gave him some breakfast and we started to talk to him and calm him down. The director of the facility showed up and explained that the man had not had a good night sleep in 15 years....yea 15 fucking years. I'd be a little pissed off and might resort to swinging a wheel chair foot rest if I didn't sleep in 15 years so I gave the old guy some slack. He also said they were trying to give him some new meds and were trying to get him to take it after they put it in some yogurt but the old dude wasn't having any of it. After 15 minutes he had calmed down and we left him alone and told the staff that if he acts up to call us back.
We had a few alarms and a disabled motorist and another call or two when at 1500 I got a domestic between a mother and her 14 year old bi-racial daughter. Now I know your asking yourself "why did he put bi-racial in there" well it was in the notes of the call and if the mother felt is was important to tell the call taker that her daughter was bi-racial then who am I to question why she did it. For the record it would make no difference how I handled the call weather she was bi-racial or tri-racial.
The mother and daughter got into it because the father (mom and dad are divorced) had recently gained temporary full custody of the daughter and now mom thinks that the daughter and father are conspiring against her so when they go to court in June the father will get full custody for good so now mom is secretly recording all her conversations with her daughter because she wants to catch her in a lie. Well after 45 minutes of the back and forth banter I finally had enough. I told them that their relationship was a train wreck which was headed off the rails and that if they don't get some type of counseling very soon it will be unrepairable and everybody will suffer. Just as I was finishing my tirade the father calls because it is time for the daughter to go back with him. I reiterated about the counseling and said good luck and goodbye.
Hope you all had a good day.....I'll salvage the rest of mine with some Legend Brown Ale.
